An extension strip is often bought because several plugs meet in one place. The number of outlets is only one criterion. The permitted load, connected devices' instructions and a suitable location matter too. A general buying article does not replace assessment of an uncertain electrical installation.

List the devices actually intended for connection. Read their power-supply instructions and relevant ratings. Equipment specified for direct connection to a wall socket does not become suitable for another arrangement simply because a larger strip is available.

Read the strip's rating

The permitted total load applies to the strip as a whole, not separately to every outlet. Brennenstuhl's safety guidance also explains that socket strips should not be connected one after another. Several strips do not add electrical capacity.

Do not substitute a generic wattage figure for the marking on the actual product. Check its information and ask an appropriate qualified person about uncertainty over loading or connection. This article deliberately does not provide instructions for pushing an existing installation to its limits.

Account for plug shapes and controls

Large power adapters may block neighbouring outlets. Check spacing and orientation against the intended plugs. A strip with many closely packed sockets can accommodate fewer usable connections than the headline count suggests.

Any switches should remain accessible at the intended location. Decide whether a shared switch or individual controls suit the routine. Extra features matter only when their documented purpose is required. A protective marketing description is not a reason to disregard loading or installation instructions.

Plan the cable route before purchase

Measure the distance along an appropriate route, not merely a straight line between socket and desk. Avoid arrangements that crush or damage the cable and follow the product's environmental-use instructions. Indoor and outdoor use are not interchangeable.

Do not extend a short strip with another strip. Choose a suitable solution for the intended use or change the arrangement. Permanent changes to electrical wiring belong with a qualified professional.

Consider condition and replacement

Check an existing product for visible damage and do not continue using damaged components. Do not improvise repairs to mains cables or housings. Conversely, the low price of a new strip does not justify replacing an intact suitable one without need.

Finally, compare appropriate products by outlet layout, cable length, markings and required functions. The choice should follow a clear device list and a resolved location. The largest socket count is not a substitute for those checks.
