Occasional printing calls for more than the cheapest cartridge price. The important factors are the pages you actually need, suitable printing technology and what happens between long gaps in use. A theoretical yield under test conditions is not automatically the number of finished pages you will obtain.
Describe the printing demand
Count ordinary tasks over several months: forms, shipping labels, photographs or colour documents. Separate material that must be produced at home from rare optional jobs. A small number of important pages may justify owning a printer, but implies different priorities from regular high-volume work.
Record whether colour is genuinely required. Do not select a multi-cartridge machine solely for its low initial price if its ongoing supplies do not fit the task. Check paper sizes and document requirements too. A label and a photograph are not equivalent example pages.
Read the conditions behind yield
Epson explains its yield test conditions and notes ink use beyond producing pages, including cleaning. Do not therefore treat cartridge price divided by advertised yield as a guaranteed personal cost per page. It can provide one comparison point, but remains tied to its underlying conditions.
Check the cartridges or bottles for the exact printer and whether the supplied quantity matches the separately sold replacement version. An inexpensive starter package can otherwise obscure later expenditure. Record the versions you will need to buy and their current full prices including delivery. This also prevents a comparison using the wrong capacity cartridge.
Account for long pauses
Read operating and care directions for infrequent use. Perform maintenance as instructed rather than repeatedly starting cleaning programmes without a reason. The appropriate routine depends on the model. If the printer will regularly stand unused, that situation belongs in the purchase decision.
Then compare ownership with a realistic alternative for occasional jobs, such as an accessible printing service. Include travel, opening hours and the handling of personal documents. The most suitable solution need not have the lowest theoretical ink cost. It should produce the pages you genuinely require with an understandable total effort and expense. That is a more useful target than a headline yield that may not represent your routine.
